Valvular disease - Aortic Valve

The aortic valve can be affected by congenital and acquired conditions.

The most common congenital malrofmation of the valve is the bicuspid aortic valve. However unicuspid and quadricuspid variants can also occur.

The acquired diseases of the aortic valve are usually post-inflammatory.  In the developing world rheumatic heart disease is probably the most comon type.  Scarring of the valve secondary to inflammation due to infectious agents or autoimmune diseases is the second more common acquired type.  Lastly, inherited metabolic diseases can also affect the valve leaflets.
