In this example, the heart is shown from a dorsal view point. The right ventricle shows mural endocarditis. In this instance there are "fungus balls" present in the right ventricle of this infant, just below the tricuspid valve. On microscopic examination, candida hyphae are evident within the endocardial fungus balls. The large masses of hyphal elements are shown in the microscopic images. ( H&E x40; c, PAS x 400).
